The processes related to technology in the industry require measurements of the flow of water. This data is very crucial to control all the functions with maximum accuracy. For this purpose, a Flow Measurement Water flow meter is used. The best performance of some operations needs specific rates of flow of water. That is why the exact measurement of rates of flow of water is essential in industrial applications.

Water is mostly measured either in volume rate or in weight rate.

There are many kinds of units that can be used to measure the flow rate. The types of units depend on the information which is needed by the user. Water flow can be expressed either in weight rate or in volume rate. The volume rate includes

  • 1. Tons per hour
  • 2. Kg per minute
  • 3. Liters per hour
  • 4. Liters per minute
  • 5. Cum per hour, and more.

4 Types of Water Flow Meters and their Working

Mechanical flow meters: The Mechanical Flow Measurement water flow meter is the most common and efficient type of water flow meter. It measures flow through turbine rotation with a propeller, shunt, or paddle wheel. The water running through the channel causes a turbine or piston to rotate. The mechanical water flow meters work by measuring the speed of flow.

The water's volumetric flow rate gets increased with the increase in the speed of the rotation of the blades. The disadvantage of this flow meter is that it may clog up when using with dirty water.

Vortex flow meter: When water flows around a rock in a stream or the wind past a flagpole, vortices are produced. Vortices are like a force of nature, which can be considered 'swirls' in a fluid. Vortex water flow meters use the concept of Vortex to sense the flow of water. The Vortex flow meter senses the hindrance faced by its sensors. It then calculates the exact rate of flow of the water as the hindrance directly depends upon the rate of water flow.

Vortex flowmeters with a multivariable version can measure up to five process variable processes with one process connection:

  • 1. Flow rate of volume flow
  • 2. Mass flow
  • 3. Density
  • 4. Pressure
  • 5. Temperature

Ultrasonic flow meter: Ultrasonic flow measurement uses the concept of Ultrasounds to measure water flow. An ultrasonic signal is sent in the way of the flow of the water downstream. Then, another signal is sent in the opposite direction of the flow of water.

The sonic signal's time to travel downstream is compared with the signal that is traveling opposite to it. This difference in time can be used to calculate the water's velocity that is flowing through the pipe. This fluid velocity can be used to calculate the volumetric flow rate.

Magnetic Flow Meters: Magnetic Flow Meters use a magnetic field to measure the velocity of a fluid flowing in the pipe. Magnetic flow meter use Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction. Faraday's Law says that when a fluid flows through a field of magnetism, it produces an electric current. More electric current rises with a rise in the flow of water. The electric current is produced with the motion of the water. Electronic devices process the electric signal into the flow rate. Magnetic flowmeters don't have accurate accuracy. They cannot work on pure water since there are no ions to track.

Conclusion

The best type of flow measure water flow meter depends upon the application of flow meter. Different flow meters work well in measuring different things. If you need more info about various water flow meter, you can visit our website at Proteusind.com.
