The Higgs field is a quantum field that permeates the entire universe. It is a key mechanism in the Standard Model of physics for converting energy into mass, and is regarded as the fundamental process by which elementary particles acquire mass.

Invisible and intangible, it fills every part of the cosmos uniformly and possesses a stable ground-state energy, making it difficult to detect directly. Its existence can only be confirmed through the Higgs boson (the so-called “God Particle”), an excitation of the field. The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 provided direct experimental proof of the Higgs field.

In the early universe, when temperatures were extremely high, all elementary particles existed as pure energy, moving at the speed of light with no mass at all. As the universe cooled, the Higgs field settled into a stable energy state and began to drive energy-mass conversion. As massless energetic particles passed through the Higgs field, they interacted with it, becoming restrained and slowed down. The previously ethereal pure energy was thus transformed into the rest mass of the particles, giving them inertia and mass.

Different particles interact with the Higgs field to varying degrees. Electrons, quarks, and other particles interact strongly and gain significant mass through this conversion. Photons and gluons, by contrast, do not interact with the Higgs field at all, so they remain in their pure energy form and are massless.

Notably, the Higgs field only enables specific elementary particles to gain mass via energy conversion, accounting for only a small fraction of total matter mass. It is not the only field in the universe that converts energy into mass, yet it serves as the foundational field that makes possible the formation of tangible matter and all structures in the universe.
