长期以来,我一直对地瓜、土豆等作物何以能如此高产、果实如此硕大感到好奇。最初我以为,这只是因为它们生长在地下,不受外界风吹雨打,故而可以充分膨大。直到后来观察到西瓜、南瓜等匍匐于地面的果实同样能长得极为巨大,我才豁然开朗:真正决定这一切的,并非土壤遮蔽,而是重力。植物所有器官的生长,都受地球重力场的硬性力学管控。果实不是想长多大就能长多大,它的尺寸上限,从来不是由营养决定,而是由它需要承受多少重力拉扯、需要多少结构支撑自重决定。重力越强、支撑压力越大,果实就越小;重力约束越小、不需要悬空承重,果实就能膨大。

地球赤道自转离心力最大,抵消了一部分万有引力,赤道区域有效重力天生更弱。重力负担变小,树木枝条承受的机械压力变小,不需要高强度支撑结构。因此赤道地区天然盛产巨型悬空果实,最典型就是椰子。别的纬度长不出这种巨型挂果,不是水土问题,是重力强度不允许。
