Choosing a new lock for an exterior door is not only about looks. A few details decide whether it is actually secure and whether it will fit without extra work.

Deadbolt first

The knob or lever latch keeps the door closed. The deadbolt is what keeps it locked against force. Every exterior door, including the one from the garage into the house, should have a deadbolt with a bolt that extends about an inch into the frame.

Look for a graded lock

Many residential locks are tested to ANSI/BHMA grades, with Grade 1 the most durable and Grade 3 the most basic. The grade is usually printed on the packaging. For a front door, a higher grade is worth it.

Fit matters

Measure the backset (edge of the door to the center of the hole), the size of the existing holes, and the door thickness before you buy. Most locks fit standard doors, but older or unusual doors may need a different kit or extra drilling.

The frame and strike

A strong lock in a weak frame is a weak door. A reinforced strike plate and long screws that reach the framing behind the jamb make a big difference.

Keyed alike

If you are replacing more than one lock, have them keyed alike so one key works on every exterior door.

Smart and keypad options

Electronic deadbolts add codes and app control. Make sure the door closes smoothly without lifting or pushing, or the motor will struggle and drain batteries.

Choice City Locksmith provides lock installation in Fort Collins, from deadbolts and handle sets to smart locks, across Northern Colorado. Phone (970) 803-1100.
