We all know what waking up to a bad hangover feels. Throbbing headache, weakness, nausea, and stomach upset. You might swear not to drink again, but that is a promise that rarely comes true. Here’s what you can do to combat hangovers.

Sip Ginger Tea

Throughout history, ginger has been used to treat a variety of ailments, including nausea and stomach upset. In fact, research shows the effectiveness of ginger towards treating chemotherapy-induced nausea. Drinking ginger tea upon waking up can ease your symptoms so that eating will be tolerable.

Have a Nutritious Breakfast

Even if you may not have the appetite, eating breakfast is important to settle your stomach and replenish lost nutrients after drinking. Be sure your breakfast is packed with the right amounts of fat, protein, electrolytes, and complex carbohydrates to maintain your blood sugar levels. A good example is whole wheat avocado toast with a side of hard-boiled egg and banana.

Have a Pre-Drinking Meal Full of B Vitamins

Essential to brain function and energy, B vitamins are particularly affected by alcohol consumption, thus causing symptoms of brain fog and lack of energy. A meal packed with B vitamins before and after drinking can help fight hangover symptoms. Good sources include organ meats, poultry, cheese, milk, and eggs.

Order Antioxidant-Rich Hors d’oeuvres

If you’re prone to getting hangovers whenever you drink, it’s probably because you lack antioxidants, which you need to fight the oxidative stress your body experiences when consuming alcohol. While drinking with your buddies, it’s best to have nuts, seeds, cherries, and berries on the side.

Increase Water Intake

Notice how you pee a lot during a drinking session? It’s because alcohol is a diuretic. Most hangover symptoms stem from dehydration, so be sure to chug as much water as you can before and after a night out.
